Mix-up in Court of Appeals leaves Chilean mayor suspended

Ñuñoa Mayor Pedro Sabat is suspended for not following orders.

Pedro Sabat, the often controversial mayor of Santiago’s Ñuñoa neighborhood, was handed a 30-day suspension at half his salary by the Court of Appeals on Thursday.

Sabat insisted that the suspension is unfounded and is the result of a mix up in paperwork.

“It is simply a mistake”, the mayor told La Tercera.

Chilean opposition strikes back over release of Bachelet video

The Concertación coalition parties defend Michelle Bachelet from criticism.

Deputies from Chile’s liberal Concertación coalition rose to the defense of former president Michelle Bachelet on Thursday, resigning en masse from a committee charged with investigating her administration’s bungled tsunami response two years ago. The resignation came as a reaction to the release by conservative deputies of a video that called Bachelet’s management of the situation into question.
